Project Profile: Modern Family Home

An interview

An interview with Brownstone Design & Co., and Sarah Gardiner from Zaneen.

This Modern Family Home models contemporary family living at its finest. Designed by a husband and wife team (founder and owner of Brownstone Design & Co), the breathtaking open-concept interior delivers modernist design principles with thoughtfully selected finishes throughout. Brownstone Design & Co. worked with Zaneen to carefully select lighting solutions from all three divisions of Zaneen lighting – architectural, design and exterior – allowing for ease of coordination, quality and consistency by working with one brand. From the kitchen to the bathroom and every thoughtfully-designed space in between, all of the fixtures used are energy efficient, dimmable and customized in order to suit the needs and dimensions of the spaces. Since the specifications of their home were not standard, our experts provided the necessary knowledge and advice to install high-quality products to match the luxury home. Collaborating with Zaneen, Brownstone Design & Co. was able to turn lighting from just a functional element into art, bringing the overall interior design to life with the use of dark wood embellishments, gorgeous marble backdrops and more. The result is a magazine worthy home that is at once modern, comfortable, and conducive to raising a family.

Sarah Gardiner: What was the overall project vision?

Brownstone Design & Co: Open-concept living was ideal for us. We wanted a modern comfortable home, but not too modern where it felt cold and wasn’t conducive to raising a family. We also wanted to make sure it had all the necessities such as a playroom on the main floor and gym in the basement.

SG: How did the project develop in terms of design and initial concept?

BDC: Everything was pretty consistent from beginning to end-because they put so much work and attention to detail from the start. Only some small things changed like removing the butler’s pantry to make it more open concept.

SG: Why did you specify Zaneen?

BDC: We wanted things well done. It was also great to work with just one lighting company to solve all our lighting needs. The home features all three division of Zaneen lighting, even the pot lights are Zaneen. We opted for a high-end brand to compliment the other finishes in the luxury home.

SG: Did you run into any challenges from the time of specification to installation?

BDC: Since the specifications of our home were not standard, having the appropriately skilled and knowledgeable installers for some of the fixtures was necessary.

SG: What was your favorite part about the project?

BDC: All of the lighting is dimmable which allows us to create a certain mood in our home with just lighting. The Brooklyn fixture in the primary bathroom makes a great addition. Having this high-quality lighting meant that we didn’t need a vanity.
